Commonwealth Games village showcases livable housing to 6,000 athletes and officials

4 Apr 2018

The Commonwealth Games opened today with 6,000 athletes and officials from around the world seeing Livable Housing Australia designed dwellings in the Games Village which will be their place to call home over the two weeks of the games.

The project was completed in late 2017 and used to accommodate the athletes of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The Parklands Commonwealth Games Village proudly embraces Livable Housings Australia’s Livable Housing Guidelines. The 1,170 apartments have been designed to the Gold Standard, and all 82 townhouses to the Silver Standard. This compliments the accessible urban design features found throughout the public realm including parks, pedestrian routes and outdoor meeting places.

After the Commonwealth Games Grocon will prepare the development for a mixed-use residential community with the apartments and townhouses to become available for public rent and possible purchase from early 2019.

The Village will be repurposes for residential and commercial purposes, including 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments and townhouses that will be available from early 2019.

Livable Housing Australia and its Assessors are proud to have supported the development of the Games Village to meet Livable Housing Guidelines to make the village purpose fit for young families, people with temporary injury, people with a disability and ageing who will live in the dwellings beyond the games.

Specialist Disability Accommodation Design Standards available

SDA refers to accommodation for people who require specialist housing solutions, including to assist with the delivery of supports that cater to their extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. SDA does not refer to the support services, but the homes in which these are delivered. SDA may, for example, have specialist designs for people with very high needs or a location or features that make it feasible to provide complex or costly supports for independent living.
