Livable Housing Australia – Call for Expressions of Interest

LHA currently sits in a unique position as a peak body that drives industry best practice through its Livable Housing Design Guidelines.  LHA works closely with key stakeholders from the residential building and property industry, the ageing, disability and human rights sector, government and increasingly investors, financiers and banks. LHA provides industry with the tools and knowledge needed to design and deliver liveable homes.

LHA promotes livable housing design elements that provide added comfort, safety and ease of access as core design features making the home easier for parents and carers to maneuver prams; to carry the shopping into the house; and for people with disability or temporary injury to get around. These same features enable key living spaces to be easily and cost effectively adapted to meet the changing needs and abilities of home occupants such as ageing baby boomers and people who have or acquire a disability.

Through its advocacy LHA informs and supports the NDIS Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) Design Standards. LHA was engaged by NDIS and developed the standalone SDA Design Standards and the certification model that are now required for SDA.

LHA’s work

LHA leads the development of liveable housing across Australia.  LHA does this through:

  • Certifying that a home is easier to access, navigate and live in, and that it is cost effective to adapt as life’s circumstances change.
  • Educating through a program of professional accreditation that provides assurance for industry and the community as they seek informed advice.
  • Advocating for policy and regulation that supports industry and professional leadership.

The LHA Liveable Housing Design Guidelines provide Australia’s only best practice standards for liveable housing agreed in partnership between community, consumer groups, government and industry.

LHA registers and supports the work of over 250 LHA Assessors and 60 SDA Assessors who can sign off on accessible housing design and as-built homes built to the LHA’s Livable Housing Design Guidelines and SDA Design Standards.

  2. The ACBC’s minimum accessibility standards for housing RIS highlighted the benefits and value placed on Livable Housing Design Guideline performance levels.
